Domestic Partnership

We are lucky to live in California. After many years of hard work and political advocacy, our State’s domestic partners have finally been given the option of legal recognition. But with these historic rights come responsibilities. My job as a family law attorney is to help you understand the new laws as they apply to your particular situation, whether you wish to register as domestic partners or file for dissolution/divorce.

Domestic Partner Rights Include:

  • Step-parent adoption procedures
  • Healthcare and medical emergency
  • Protections upon death of partner
  • Access to life and car insurance
  • Employment benefits including health insurance
  • File a joint tax return within California

Domestic Partner Responsibilities Include:

  • Liability for community debts, including medical expenses, incurred during the partnership
  • Equal ownership of community assets encompassing purchases made during the term of the registered partnership
  • Potential duty to provide spousal support should the relationship end
  • Individual incomes during the partnership are considered community property

The relationship of registered domestic partners in the state of California may only be terminated in family court.

If you are seeking a domestic partnership dissolution/divorce, I will work with you to resolve your breakup with as little animosity as possible, while still protecting your rights.
